A man is a victim of identity theft after his ex-wife applies for credit online and is required to give some of his information. The man had to close every account that he had included bank accounts, credit accounts, store accounts, investments, etc. In addition he is now heavily in debt, is constantly receiving calls from collections agencies and is at a high risk of bankruptcy. Identity theft has greatly changed his life and has created this battle that has been lasting several years with little to no help or understanding from collectors, credit companies, and banks.
A woman was a victim of identity theft. Someone went to the bank and attempted to clear her entire savings account. She was able to provide the bank teller with a driver’s license with the correct address and a picture of the thief. She was also able to provide the correct phone number and banking information. Luckily the teller had enough intuition to not allow the thief to take the money. The bank alerted the victim of the identity theft and gave her instructions on how to follow up. Although she was provided with assistance it took years in order to reverse the effects and still to this day they know that the thief still has all of their information and is able to do this again at any time.
A woman is attacked outside of her home and has her purse stolen. Her purse contained her wallet with her credit cards, cash, and her social security card in it. She took the necessary steps in informing the police of the attack and theft and thought she was in the clear. Almost 90 days later she receives a call from Macys, and several other stores to inform her that someone has taken out accounts in her name and charged at least $1000 to each account. She then had to deal with canceling all of these new accounts and worry what was going to happen next.
This lady (Donna) started getting panic attacks when someone stole her personal information and used it to get her into debt. She was getting harassing calls from collections agencies and lawsuit threats. It took her almost 8 years to deal with the matter. Her credit card company has been completely unsympathetic.
